Looking at our state of affairs in the UK: it seems we are lacking ‘patriotism’. Like anything else British or English for that matter is not good enough, we ought to be Americanised, we ought to make everything like hot dog and 4th of July! Beat the ‘arses’ out! American patriotism that finds glory in Vietnam and Iraq! American patriotism that claims that America is the best, that Americans are the best, American Justice is the best, Americans anything is the best: like Abu Ghraib, like Guantanamo Bay, like death penalty, the gun lobby playing with lives and living! America is one of the best nation on earth but we are not here looking at what makes the appear good but the raw reality. We have made our Prime Minister becoming by default a President. He could now agree with some other head of state or government and get us into war without even a proper debate in the all-powerful sovereign parliament! So now we are Simpsons and big Daddies and the rest. Propaganda continues to establish America as the best and the rest, well, you are either "with the Woolwich or without"! “Dead or Alive” we want American Justice done. We want to establish torture as an acceptable norm; we want to see so called rendition is rendered here acceptable! So here we are with a proposed Britishness Day. There is nothing wrong with a national celebration of common humanity. But all we seek to ensure is that we are not beginning a trend of glorifying horrendously ugly sort of patriotism or nationalism that germinates the grounds for fascism to develop and kill our best earned principles of due process of law, democracy, human and individual rights as well as our civil liberties and fundamental human rights and freedoms. We ought to celebrate our achievements: we ought to feel some sense of purpose and we ought feel a sense of belonging but we must not make a superior feeling lunatics out of ourselves putting the rest of the humanity down. Let us celebrate the commonness of humanity, oneness of it and its enormous magnitude and magnificence in its diversity. Britain should begin to explore this celebration that should radiate across the globe: let us celebrate Europe, let us celebrate the United Nation of Humanity and let us not get ourselves boxed into this Island thing: let us not create that Bogus Boo that is out there to take our Englishness, Waleshness, Scottishness or Britishness away! There is nothing to lose but everything to gain. We must remember things do not stay static in social, political and cultural spheres of society. The devolution of the nineties saw rising sense and expression of determinate nationalism radiating from Edinburgh, from Cardiff and from Belfast which is not a bad thing but at the same time there is a growing and rising resenting English Nationalism developing and all these forms of nationalism must be understood and therefore, politicians must remember not to play with fires. We are no insular nation: the world is moving towards a nation of Humanity and American government and the old guard of the world are trying to keep people in national identity jackets that no longer fit. In fact, they are strangling us to death. England or Britain came to the fore of the world not simply because once it ruled most parts of this planet, surely it helped the exposure and importance, but England came to prominence because it could show the world the way to enlightenment and vision bigger than village maps. England is an Island among millions of others on this planet but England became a leader because it showed the world how all these islands can form one island, one nation, one entity and now England is not going to abandon this? England should begin to celebrate the beginning of the Nation of Humanity Day here: this day would celebrate Humanity to which we have a lot to deposit. We have had enough of nationalism, we have had the Stalinist nationalism that wore the clothing of a Marxist Leninist raincoat. We have seen what a so called nationalist, in Hitler or in so many others like him, could cajole and manipulate a people into turning into his monsters (whether by choice or by force or intimidation is a different matter). Not any more. There is no need here to try and manipulate to get the so-called dirty juice of blinding national fervour into our lives. In fact, this is unique about Englishness or Britishness that it always lacked that sentimentalism element in its psyche unlike a lot of other nations and probably that is why all these British institutions, culture and the philosophical bases have been achieved. It's time we look to unite Humanity with the commonness we share and celebrate the links that strengthen us. The days to portray superiority and inferiority are over. Therefore, instead of a Britishness Day let’s begin a day to celebrate our common humanity and here we have England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and all the other Isles in one umbrella but along with these nations we have the rest of humanity represented here. This is what we ought to be begin to celebrate. Not nationalism but a future bound humanism showing the way forward for humanity, showing the future humanical ways and learn more about humanics so that we can abandon old adversarial doctrine of us and them, right and left, labour and conservatives and this and that and we all work together to solve the equation of life together. Most important fact is this, particularly, important to bear in mind, that the sense of stronger Welshness, Scottishness and Irishness and so on are growing stronger and this brings us to the question of Englishness too. So now Britshness either ought to incorporate all these nations together by emphasising the commonness we share. Once we are looking at binding and bringing all these nations together in one common purpose of a nation state we ought to almost acknowledge that it is almost bringing the whole humanity together. Add to that the fact that, we have the whole of humanity represented in this British population and with them and through the historic, vini, vidi, vici of Britain in the world stage means that the world and all their cultures, languages, religions, customs and traditions have contributed to this Britishness. Hence, we add all these together and what we get is not Britishness but a humanness that is unique to Britain and this is the greatest gift Britain could proudly offer the rest of humanity. This is the seed of the future of a nation of Humanity, Humanion, which we could sow in today’s Britain, which would encourage Europe and the world too to come on board to foster and celebrate. Our humanity is one and the globe is one too and all people that occupy this planet are essentially bound together. And we know this to be the case more than ever before after the mess of global capitalism has muddled everything up. This is an utter waste of human energies and resources to try and form so called national identities anymore. Any identity that is important and can hold water is our humanity. Let us enhance what we have achieved for the last centuries: the universal values, practices, cultures and respect for the sanctity of life and the values of peaceful existence and a profound sense of justice and fairness. There is no need to import American nationalism, which is beginning to be questioned already in America itself. What America must feel proud of is not its Guantanamo Bay, not its Death Penalty or its ugly rendition fiasco but its beautiful achievements in achieving, celebrating and feeling comfortable with making the whole world come into a family. America herself needs to begin to celebrate not American nationalism but Universal humanism. There is no need to manipulate people into wasting of spirit and mind. There is nothing wrong with our sense of Britishness or Englishness or Scottishness or Welshness or Irishness but let’s not create a pseudo American façade in Britain! All we ought to do is to look at our lives and try to light it up. Let's take a look at the way religions take shape and impact on our lives. Britain is a country where the whole world regions have a home yet our Queen is the Head of Church. Our Queen is the Head of the State of Britain! Now here goes secularity into pear shape! We are a ‘Christian’ country unofficially. There is nothing wrong in saying that because Christianity is the majority religion; but everywhere Christmas plays a big role and other Christian Holidays are observed, rightly so. Yet no other religious holidays are acknowledged at all. The media, the market, the press and the rest go in festival mood including the BBC in these religious days. There is nothing wrong in that. But the problems arise when the kids from Rastafarian background go unacknowledged; the kids of Islamic faith go unrecognised at school. Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish and all other religious holidays are not observed as part of the school or cultural life. These children are forced to feel that there is something wrong in their religions. They are bound to wonder why they sing Christmas carol yet when their religious festival comes they have to just miss a day of school, where some local authority would allow it the others would mark them as unauthorised absence. The day goes in lot of activities and children get tired yet they have to drag themselves to school the day after. As they walk to school they think nobody goes to school on Boxing Day. There is no mention of any other religious festivals in the national media: television, radio and the print media which suggests only one thing that no other religion exists in the cultural spheres of Britain. There needs to be a debate about this issue. We need a great debate about majority imposition. Secularism ought to mean religions do not become part of the state and that the state treats all religions with equal respect without any favour or sanctions. In order to do that our Monarchy ought to let go of their reign of The Church of England, which then ought to be headed by its own leader of the Clergy (Archbishop of Canterbury, may be) and the state becomes free of religion at last! Instead the Monarchy then may have a Religious Council on a state level, established by statue that is represented by representatives from all religions: big and small. All other religions ought to be able to observe their religious festivities and sacred days like the majority religion. The BBC and other public service media outlets ought to show greater awareness in its programming and ought to cover all the religious festivity news so that it creates greater understanding. Everyone gets holidays during Christmas and the non-Christians learn about Christianity yet they don't become Christians. When other religious festivals become national holidays that can only act as a point of national understanding. Prejudices, ignorant bias and phobias would give way to better understanding of each other. So all major religious days of all religions become national holidays. This would ensure that we are learning about each other, majority and minority is nothing but power terms of the mediaeval times. Where we talk about democracy, civil liberties and fundamental freedoms we talk about moral righteousness of a society, this is a political morality, social morality and cultural too and therefore it does not fit in the vocabulary of these values and moralities to bring in majority and minority question. There is nothing to be had or to lose by belonging to a majority of something the very way it should not be the case if one belongs to a so called minority. Yet it seems there is this imposition thing of the majority not only in force and practise but almost acceptable norm! Britain ought to be proud of its achievements in getting the whole world's nations living and growing together with a sense of nationhood. Probably all the nations can be gathered round a table in London in an hour's notice. If we need to celebrate anything this is what we ought to celebrate and show the world the way ahead for humanity. It is not about who is majority or minority, it is about what is fair, what is right, what is natural justice. If this is Britishness, if this is Englishness, Welshness, Scottishness or Irishness, then let us celebrate a Day of the Nation of Humanity and let us get every part of the humanity celebrate it. Let us not get politics get it muddled up. Let Britain show the world there is and always has been a better way than just finding maps and borders! A borderless mind of Humanity, a colourless mind of Humanity is what we need today more than ever to guide us as a compass. The world is now a globe; the globe is now a small village in the Solar System that is in the tiny Milky Way Galaxy that is part of an infinite Universe. Everything is connected and conjoined in these human affairs: good or bad all comes down to effect and impact on us and we now know than ever before that our whole existence, our whole survival and our whole progression and continual flow of life depend on us working together like all the individual cells of a human body do. Global warming is not a British problem nor is it an American or Chinese or Japanese problem, the climate change, the change of weather, the migration problems, the children and women trafficking, the illegal guns, drugs and crimes etc are now global and its impacts are overwhelmingly global. Furthermore, the impacts of global businesses are not just global anymore but universal because they create problems of universal magnitude like space travel, business in space, arming and arms race of space and, using space for scientific research and business purposes etc. Moreover, air and aviation, the space exploration, the technological and scientific poverty and the whole poverty thing that poisons our very existence in addition to the political monstrosity that creates these leaders that are allowed to terrorise their own people and so on and so forth. This is no time to think locally or even nationally. This is even not the time to think internationally, in fact, this is a time only to talk in one language: humanity in a Humanion being led by humanics and with one alphabet: universalism looking at the country we are emerging into: this infinite universe. We better begin to accept these challenges and get out of these little boxes of village identities. If we were to put on a raincoat of identities let’s wear an effective one that could save us from getting wet and wasted. That jacket is our humanity and the jacket is made of Universalism that can and is able to protect us and support us in our wonderful country: this cosmosian Universe.
