4th London Poetry Festival 2008

The largest gathering of contemporary English poets, both well established and new and emerging voices, is expected to come together to celebrate poetry this summer. Do join us and make a date. More details to follow.

The Poet's Letter Magazine is the place where visitors have the opportunity to explore the world of  poetry and poetic works, experiments of ideas, and exploring of issues that are important as well as relevant to the contemporary English poetry both text based and performance orientated. Poetry as it is viewed as a text based word creation taken to the people by way of paper print run as books or magazines or reviews is definitely lot younger than its original exposing media: performance poetry. Thereby Performance Poetry or performing poetry before an audience is not a new thing at all. Poets did not have the written media and even if they did the people could not read the stuff. So poetry went to people and poets performed their works before audiences.

People are using so many different terms to denote performances of poetry by poets or other performers as Performance Poetry, Poetry Performances, Performing Poetry, Spoken Words etc but there are other types of performances that are different in format and presentation such as hip hop performances or Slam Poetry performances that are essentially competitions type performances.

Although it is true to say that there are differences between a Performance Poetry piece and a non performed piece of poetic work. Yet a poem performed becomes a different entity as opposed to its static read version because the performance gives the poem a voice and character that is acted out (not in the external theatrical sense but the internal psychological manner) and because there is an audience present whose presence becomes a character to the "play" of the performed poem and there the actor (the poet) is trying to convey the inner theatrics of a poem before an audience. It is true though to say that there are certain poems that are not suitable for performances yet they are good poems.

Whether Performance Poetry has theatre in them is a question which can be attempted to answer if one looks at a performance which essentially acts out something that relates to a character and therefore a poem performed is an act of theatre, not a whole play. In a performed poem we do not see the character developing but at a point of development and the poet gets us to empathise with that stage and state of development at which we find the character. Whatever the nature of the poem lyrical or not there are characters in them and therefore when they are brought out before an audience they evoke emotional, psychological and spiritual responses from the audience like a play.

Yet there is a growing tendency to equate performance poetry to acts of comedy or stand up comedy to simply use poetry to substantiate comedy and get people to have a good laugh. There is no harm in using humour and wit in poetry but a piece of poem must be a true poem and then performed. If it comes originally with the comedy strip fine, but if it has not but made to become like that because audience would like it to be a stand up laugh, the poem may not get much further than the laughter.

However, here you have the scope to  experience and explore Poetry, poetry news and performance news and events of a lot of contemporary English Poets who are making noises and receiving audience acclaims in London and around the country as well as other parts of the English speaking countries. New to poetry or to writing poetry? Feel welcome here and send us your writing news, events and other Performances.

Spell is a CD featuring Nathalie Handal’s poetry and music by Egyptian musician Will Solimon. It is a unique collaboration where Egyptian percussion is combined with poetry for the first time.

Nathalie Handal's voice is thick with longing and mystery and calls to a time when words still made and unmade the world. Everything here is a rare and intense dance and yet these poems do not offer easy solace. But in every loss there is the knowledge of belonging, and ultimately redemption. That; and the powerful spell they weave is urgent and vital and necessary.
-Chris Abani. Author of GraceLand and Becoming Abigail.

On my way from Allentown to Philadelphia for a concert, I was listening to Spell. I thought I would listen for a few minutes but ended up listening to the entire recording. As a musician I am used to hearing a singing voice with percussion, and Nathalie's poetry and delivery is nothing other than singing with percussion.
-Simon Shaheen. Turath and Blue Flame

POETRY NOW INTERNATIONAL POETRY FESTIVAL DUBLIN

March 23-26 2006 ٠ Dun Laoghaire
www.dlrcoco.ie/arts

Poetry Now, Ireland’s leading poetry festival, is celebrating its eleventh year with a galaxy of readings in Dun Laoghaire’s Pavilion Theatre from March 23rd-26th 2006.

This year, some 20 Irish and international poets will travel to Dun Laoghaire for what promises to be a thrilling festival weekend, with first-time readers in Ireland including Bill Manhire, the first New Zealand poet laureate and four-time winner of the New Zealand Book of the Year Award; and Yusef Komunyakaa, the Pulitzer Prize winning American poet, who has also won the Bronze Star for Duty in Vietnam, and who is renowned for his performances of his work.

The line-up further includes Jean Valentine, the winner of the 2004 US National Book Award; the great Polish poet Adam Zagajewski; Chinese dissident poet Yang Lian; UK poets Robin Robertson and Alice Oswald; and the celebrated Irish poets, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill; Medbh McGuckian, Vona Groarke, Dennis O’Driscoll, Nick Laird and many others.

In addition to the main readings, the announcement of the winners of Ireland’s two main poetry awards - the 2006 Irish Times Poetry Now Award for Best Collection of Poems; and the Strong Award for Best First Collection - will take place. There will be a keynote address: Thomas Kinsella and Irish Poetry, master classes for aspiring poets, outreach programmes, and of course, some late nights!

This key annual gathering of poets, publishers, critics, representatives of international poetry platforms and poetry translators, makes the festival an important meeting place and social event for all poetry lovers.

So why not take yourself down to Dun Laoghaire this weekend …and treat yourself to some poetry.

Poetry Now is produced by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and sponsored by the Arts Council.
